Chapter 24

1 And again3254 the anger639 of the LORD3068 was kindled2734 against Israel,3478 and he moved5496 853 David1732 against them to say,559 Go,1980 number4487 853 Israel3478 and Judah.3063

2 For the king4428 said559 to413 Joab3097 the captain8269 of the host,2428 which834 was with854 him, Go7751 now4994 through all3605 the tribes7626 of Israel,3478 from Dan4480 1835 even to5704 Beer-sheba,884 and number6485 ye853 the people,5971 that I may know3045 853 the number4557 of the people.5971

3 And Joab3097 said559 unto413 the king,4428 Now the LORD3068 thy God430 add3254 unto413 the people,5971 how many soever they be1992 1992 a hundredfold,3967 6471 and that the eyes5869 of my lord113 the king4428 may see7200 it: but why4100 doth my lord113 the king4428 delight2654 in this2088 thing?1697

4 Notwithstanding the king's4428 word1697 prevailed2388 against413 Joab,3097 and against5921 the captains8269 of the host.2428 And Joab3097 and the captains8269 of the host2428 went out3318 from the presence6440 of the king,4428 to number6485 853 the people5971 of Israel.3478

5 And they passed over5674 853 Jordan,3383 and pitched2583 in Aroer,6177 on the right side3225 of the city5892 that834 lieth in the midst8432 of the river5158 of Gad,1410 and toward413 Jazer: 3270

6 Then they came935 to Gilead,1568 and to413 the land776 of Tahtim-hodshi;8483 and they came935 to Dan-jaan,1842 and about5439 to413 Zidon,6721

7 And came935 to the stronghold4013 of Tyre,6865 and to all3605 the cities5892 of the Hivites,2340 and of the Canaanites:3669 and they went out3318 to413 the south5045 of Judah,3063 even to Beer-sheba.884

8 So when they had gone7751 through all3605 the land,776 they came935 to Jerusalem3389 at the end4480 7097 of nine8672 months2320 and twenty6242 days.3117

9 And Joab3097 gave up5414 853 the sum4557 of the number4662 of the people5971 unto413 the king:4428 and there were1961 in Israel3478 eight8083 hundred3967 thousand505 valiant2428 men376 that drew8025 the sword;2719 and the men376 of Judah3063 were five2568 hundred3967 thousand505 men.376

10 And David's1732 heart3820 smote5221 him after310 that3651 he had numbered5608 853 the people.5971 And David1732 said559 unto413 the LORD,3068 I have sinned2398 greatly3966 in that834 I have done:6213 and now,6258 I beseech thee,4994 O LORD,3068 take away5674 853 the iniquity5771 of thy servant;5650 for3588 I have done very3966 foolishly.5528

11 For when David1732 was up6965 in the morning,1242 the word1697 of the LORD3068 came1961 unto413 the prophet5030 Gad,1410 David's1732 seer,2374 saying,559

12 Go1980 and say559 unto413 David,1732 Thus3541 saith1696 the LORD,3068 I595 offer5190 5921 thee three7969 things; choose977 thee one259 of4480 them, that I may do6213 it unto thee.

13 So Gad1410 came935 to413 David,1732 and told5046 him, and said559 unto him, Shall seven7651 years8141 of famine7458 come935 unto thee in thy land?776 or518 wilt thou flee5127 three7969 months2320 before6440 thine enemies,6862 while they1931 pursue7291 thee? or518 that there be1961 three7969 days'3117 pestilence1698 in thy land?776 now6258 advise,3045 and see7200 what4100 answer1697 I shall return7725 to him that sent7971 me.

14 And David1732 said559 unto413 Gad,1410 I am in a great3966 strait:6862 let us fall5307 now4994 into the hand3027 of the LORD;3068 for3588 his mercies7356 are great:7227 and let me not408 fall5307 into the hand3027 of man.120

15 So the LORD3068 sent5414 a pestilence1698 upon Israel3478 from the morning1242 even to5704 the time6256 appointed:4150 and there died4191 of4480 the people5971 from Dan4480 1835 even to5704 Beer-sheba884 seventy7657 thousand505 men.376

16 And when the angel4397 stretched out7971 his hand3027 upon Jerusalem3389 to destroy7843 it, the LORD3068 repented him5162 of413 the evil,7451 and said559 to the angel4397 that destroyed7843 the people,5971 It is enough:7227 stay7503 now6258 thine hand.3027 And the angel4397 of the LORD3068 was1961 by5973 the threshingplace1637 of Araunah728 the Jebusite.2983

17 And David1732 spoke559 unto413 the LORD3068 when he saw7200 853 the angel4397 that smote5221 the people,5971 and said,559 Lo,2009 I595 have sinned,2398 and I595 have done wickedly:5753 but these428 sheep,6629 what4100 have they done?6213 let thine hand,3027 I pray thee,4994 be1961 against me, and against my father's1 house.1004

18 And Gad1410 came935 that1931 day3117 to413 David,1732 and said559 unto him, Go up,5927 rear6965 an altar4196 unto the LORD3068 in the threshingfloor1637 of Araunah728 the Jebusite.2983

19 And David,1732 according to the saying1697 of Gad,1410 went up5927 as834 the LORD3068 commanded.6680

20 And Araunah728 looked,8259 and saw7200 853 the king4428 and his servants5650 coming on5674 toward5921 him: and Araunah728 went out,3318 and bowed himself7812 before the king4428 on his face639 upon the ground.776

21 And Araunah728 said,559 Wherefore4069 is my lord113 the king4428 come935 to413 his servant?5650 And David1732 said,559 To buy7069 853 the threshingfloor1637 of4480 5973 thee, to build1129 an altar4196 unto the LORD,3068 that the plague4046 may be stayed6113 from4480 5921 the people.5971

22 And Araunah728 said559 unto413 David,1732 Let my lord113 the king4428 take3947 and offer up5927 what seemeth good2896 unto him:5869 behold,7200 here be oxen1241 for burnt sacrifice,5930 and threshing instruments4173 and other instruments3627 of the oxen1241 for wood.6086

23 All3605 these things did Araunah,728 as a king,4428 give5414 unto413 the king.4428 And Araunah728 said559 unto the king,4428 The LORD3068 thy God430 accept7521 thee.

24 And the king4428 said559 unto413 Araunah,728 Nay;3808 but3588 I will surely buy7069 7069 it of4480 854 thee at a price:4242 neither3808 will I offer5927 burnt offerings5930 unto the LORD3068 my God430 of that which834 doth cost me nothing.2600 So David1732 bought7069 853 the threshingfloor1637 and the oxen1241 for fifty2572 shekels8255 of silver.3701

25 And David1732 built1129 there8033 an altar4196 unto the LORD,3068 and offered5927 burnt offerings5930 and peace offerings.8002 So the LORD3068 was entreated6279 for the land,776 and the plague4046 was stayed6113 from4480 5921 Israel.3478

Chapter 24

1 AND again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he incited David against them and said to him, Go, number Israel and Judah.

2 So the king said to Joab the commander of the army who was with him. Go now through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan to Beer-sheba and number the people, and bring to me the sum of the number of the people.

3 And Joab said to the king, May the LORD your God add to the people a hundredfold, howsoever many they be, so that the eyes of my lord the king may see it; but why does my lord the king delight in this thing?

4 Notwithstanding the king's word prevailed against Joab and against the commanders of the army. And Joab and the commanders of the army went out from the presence of the king to number the people of Israel.

5 And they crossed the Jordan and came to Sharob, which is on the right side of the city that lies in the midst of the valley of Gad and toward Eleazer;

6 Then they came to Tyre and Zidon, to the land of the Canaanites and the land of the Hittites and the land of the Jebusites,

7 And when they had gone through the whole land, they came to the land of Judah in thirty-eight days. Then they came to Dan, and circled Zidon.

8 And when they had gone through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.

9 And Joab brought the sum of the number of the people to the king; and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men who drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.

10 But David's heart smote him after he had numbered the people. And David said to the LORD, I have sinned greatly in what I have done; and now, I beseech thee, O LORD, for I have done very foolishly.

11 When David arose in the morning, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Gad, saying,

12 Go and say to David, Thus says the LORD: I will bring upon you one of three calamities; choose one of them, that I may do it to you.

13 So the prophet Gad came to David and said to him, These are the calamities which may come upon you: there shall seven years of famine come in your land, or you shall flee three months before your enemies while they pursue you, or there shall be three days of pestilence in your land. Now therefore say what answer I shall return to him who sent me to you.

14 Then David answered and said to the prophet Gad, I am greatly distressed; it is better for me to be punished by the hand of the LORD our God; for his mercies are great: let us not be punished by the hand of men.

15 So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning until the evening; and there died of the people from Dan to Beer-sheba seventy thousand men.

16 And when the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD restrained the angel of death who was destroying the people, and said to him, You have destroyed enough, stay now your hand. And the angel of the LORD was standing by the threshing floor of Aran the Jebusite.

17 Then David spoke to the LORD when he saw the angel who smote the people, and said to the angel, I have sinned and I have given provocation; but these innocent sheep, what have they done? Let thy hand be against me, and against my father's house.

18 And Gad the prophet came that day to David and said to him, Go up and build an altar to the LORD in the threshing floor of Aran the Jebusite.

19 And David went up, according to the word of Gad, as the LORD had commanded him.

20 And when Aran the Jebusite turned back and saw the king and his servants coming toward him, Aran fell down and did obeisance to the king with his face to the ground.

21 And Aran said, Why has my lord the king come to his servant? And David said to him, To buy the threshing floor from you, to build an altar to the LORD, that the plague may be stayed from the people.

22 Then Aran said to David, Let my lord the king take what seems good to him; behold, here are the oxen for the burnt offering, and the ploughshare and the yokes for fuel.

23 All these things did Aran give to King David. And Aran said to the king, May the LORD your God bless you.

24 And the king said to Aran, No, but I will surely buy it from you for a price; and I will not offer burnt offerings to the LORD my God of that which cost me nothing. So David bought the threshing floor by the garden and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

25 And David built there an altar to the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the LORD was entreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.

Chapter 24

1 And again3254 the anger639 of the LORD3068 was kindled2734 against Israel,3478 and he moved5496 853 David1732 against them to say,559 Go,1980 number4487 853 Israel3478 and Judah.3063

1 AND again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he incited David against them and said to him, Go, number Israel and Judah.

2 So the king said to Joab the commander of the army who was with him. Go now through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan to Beer-sheba and number the people, and bring to me the sum of the number of the people.

3 And Joab said to the king, May the LORD your God add to the people a hundredfold, howsoever many they be, so that the eyes of my lord the king may see it; but why does my lord the king delight in this thing?

4 Notwithstanding the king's4428 word1697 prevailed2388 against413 Joab,3097 and against5921 the captains8269 of the host.2428 And Joab3097 and the captains8269 of the host2428 went out3318 from the presence6440 of the king,4428 to number6485 853 the people5971 of Israel.3478

4 Notwithstanding the king's word prevailed against Joab and against the commanders of the army. And Joab and the commanders of the army went out from the presence of the king to number the people of Israel.

5 And they passed over5674 853 Jordan,3383 and pitched2583 in Aroer,6177 on the right side3225 of the city5892 that834 lieth in the midst8432 of the river5158 of Gad,1410 and toward413 Jazer: 3270

5 And they crossed the Jordan and came to Sharob, which is on the right side of the city that lies in the midst of the valley of Gad and toward Eleazer;

6 Then they came935 to Gilead,1568 and to413 the land776 of Tahtim-hodshi;8483 and they came935 to Dan-jaan,1842 and about5439 to413 Zidon,6721

6 Then they came to Tyre and Zidon, to the land of the Canaanites and the land of the Hittites and the land of the Jebusites,

7 And came935 to the stronghold4013 of Tyre,6865 and to all3605 the cities5892 of the Hivites,2340 and of the Canaanites:3669 and they went out3318 to413 the south5045 of Judah,3063 even to Beer-sheba.884

7 And when they had gone through the whole land, they came to the land of Judah in thirty-eight days. Then they came to Dan, and circled Zidon.

8 So when they had gone7751 through all3605 the land,776 they came935 to Jerusalem3389 at the end4480 7097 of nine8672 months2320 and twenty6242 days.3117

8 And when they had gone through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.

9 And Joab brought the sum of the number of the people to the king; and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men who drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.

10 But David's heart smote him after he had numbered the people. And David said to the LORD, I have sinned greatly in what I have done; and now, I beseech thee, O LORD, for I have done very foolishly.

11 For when David1732 was up6965 in the morning,1242 the word1697 of the LORD3068 came1961 unto413 the prophet5030 Gad,1410 David's1732 seer,2374 saying,559

11 When David arose in the morning, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Gad, saying,

12 Go1980 and say559 unto413 David,1732 Thus3541 saith1696 the LORD,3068 I595 offer5190 5921 thee three7969 things; choose977 thee one259 of4480 them, that I may do6213 it unto thee.

12 Go and say to David, Thus says the LORD: I will bring upon you one of three calamities; choose one of them, that I may do it to you.

14 Then David answered and said to the prophet Gad, I am greatly distressed; it is better for me to be punished by the hand of the LORD our God; for his mercies are great: let us not be punished by the hand of men.

15 So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning until the evening; and there died of the people from Dan to Beer-sheba seventy thousand men.

16 And when the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD restrained the angel of death who was destroying the people, and said to him, You have destroyed enough, stay now your hand. And the angel of the LORD was standing by the threshing floor of Aran the Jebusite.

17 Then David spoke to the LORD when he saw the angel who smote the people, and said to the angel, I have sinned and I have given provocation; but these innocent sheep, what have they done? Let thy hand be against me, and against my father's house.

18 And Gad1410 came935 that1931 day3117 to413 David,1732 and said559 unto him, Go up,5927 rear6965 an altar4196 unto the LORD3068 in the threshingfloor1637 of Araunah728 the Jebusite.2983

18 And Gad the prophet came that day to David and said to him, Go up and build an altar to the LORD in the threshing floor of Aran the Jebusite.

19 And David,1732 according to the saying1697 of Gad,1410 went up5927 as834 the LORD3068 commanded.6680

19 And David went up, according to the word of Gad, as the LORD had commanded him.

20 And Araunah728 looked,8259 and saw7200 853 the king4428 and his servants5650 coming on5674 toward5921 him: and Araunah728 went out,3318 and bowed himself7812 before the king4428 on his face639 upon the ground.776

20 And when Aran the Jebusite turned back and saw the king and his servants coming toward him, Aran fell down and did obeisance to the king with his face to the ground.

21 And Aran said, Why has my lord the king come to his servant? And David said to him, To buy the threshing floor from you, to build an altar to the LORD, that the plague may be stayed from the people.

22 Then Aran said to David, Let my lord the king take what seems good to him; behold, here are the oxen for the burnt offering, and the ploughshare and the yokes for fuel.

23 All3605 these things did Araunah,728 as a king,4428 give5414 unto413 the king.4428 And Araunah728 said559 unto the king,4428 The LORD3068 thy God430 accept7521 thee.

23 All these things did Aran give to King David. And Aran said to the king, May the LORD your God bless you.

24 And the king said to Aran, No, but I will surely buy it from you for a price; and I will not offer burnt offerings to the LORD my God of that which cost me nothing. So David bought the threshing floor by the garden and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

25 And David built there an altar to the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the LORD was entreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.
